AHS Student Senate Sponsors MACC Fund Event

HOPE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Hope in the Spotlight was in its inaugural year thanks to the dedication and vision of our Vice President, Brianna Alexander.  The night was created to pay tribute to her young cousin who passed away this fall from cancer.  All of the proceeds were donated to the MACC Fund.  The vision was a concert to bring the whole community together to celebrate and raise awareness about childhood cancers.

Ms. Trina Bower, Student Senate Advisor, shared that, “As an advisor, it is always stressful to start a new event. In a school our size, there are always so many activities going on every night, it is hard to raise interest in another event.  However, our Student Senate was determined to make this night a success. The night was brilliantly planned because attention was paid to every single detail of the night.” Organizing the event included planning a formal program, working collaboratively with the MACC fund, a dress rehearsal to make sure the night went smoothly, scripting lines, and gathering thank you gifts to all that made the night possible.

When asked about the student’s efforts to coordinate the funding raising event, Ms. Bower stated, “I am proud to report that Hope in the Spotlight was a huge success!” Prior to the concert, t-shirts and wristbands were designed and sold.  The night began with a moving speech from Jon McGlocklin, president and founder of the MACC fund. Brianna spoke about the realities of childhood cancer to remind the crowd the reason for the night. The event included over 20 performers with a variety of disciplines, from singers to pianists to a rock band that lasted over two hours.  During intermission there was a concession stand and a silent auction.  There were over 16 silent auction items, including a signed football from the Green Bay Packers.  There was also a grand prize raffle item for a $500 Apple Store gift certificate that was donated by a local company.  There were over 100 people in attendance and over $3,500 was raised!

Ms. Bower concluded, “I could not be more proud of our Student Senate.  For its inaugural year, I was blown away by what was accomplished. I hope to make the night an annual event and make it a tradition.”
