Creative writing students win
milwaukee public museum poetery contest
Congratulations to two of Ms. Liz Jorgensen's creative writing students, Lisa Lawler and Brenda Suhan, who were named first place winners in the Milwaukee Public Museum Poetry Contest for their poems “The Representation of Illumination—Iowa Effigy Pipes” and “Porcelain Deathbed,” respectively.
This is the Milwaukee Public Museum's fifth annual poetry competition. All Wisconsin students were encouraged to submit a poem. The theme of the competition was "Objects and Artifacts—The Poetry of the Museum's Collections." Students were encouraged to write a poem about a favorite object from the museum's collections. Entries were judged on creativity, originality imagery, artistic quality and sense of poetic expression.
Both Brenda and Lisa will be part of the special reading and awards ceremony at the Museum at 11:00am on Saturday, May 18th, 2013, on International Museum Day. You are welcome to attend. Details are below. I have also attached the winning poems, in case you are interested.
Ms. Jorgensen, sharing her thoughts on her students stated, "Congrats again to both Brenda and Lisa. I can't wait to see them present their poems at the museum. What an honor! I am so proud of them both."

Porcelain,
the chilly
White
of fresh Dresden snow
Sits on
the windowsill.
Kaleidoscope
of rich
Maroon
and gold dances
In the
winter sunshine.
The one
gift she asked for.
He
saved all his money
To
grant a final wish:
Her
childhood fantasy,
One
luxury glowing
In the
winter sunshine.
Fragility
of life
Released
in wispy breaths
Of
steam soon extinguished.
Warmth
of blood grows colder
Than
snowy porcelain
In the
winter sunshine.
Just
one more final sip,
Smiling,
content and free.
He
smiles back, an echo
Of
their love forever,
Cherished
in this moment
In the
winter sunshine.

The stories you have heard, sharing a bond
between souls and companions. The dances you have danced, lighting a friendship
with every celebration. The songs you have sung, harmonizing a sprit inside
this wondrous land.
You the ash wood, the
catlinite, you the porcupine quills and feathers. You are the one who betoken the wolves, the lizards,
and the black bears.
The
smoke flows through your stem to my lungs as the wind flows through your
feathers. You the ash wood, the porcupine quills and feathers, which elucidate the
wolf.
You allow us partake in rituals, which reinforce our
beliefs.
You remind me of the
hardships I have gone through, the fight, the struggles. You emphasize the joy and memories we have had
together.
Take me to the content
waves on lakes and the moon shining upon them. Ease my pain, relieve me from my destitution, let me
dispatch my ache.
Your
smoke fills my lungs as I breathe in deeply, then to relax once more Releasing the translucent swirls to soar in the
midst of the starry atmosphere.
