Summer School 2013

Summer School 2013 Information

Are you a student that:

1.      Would like to repeat a class to earn a higher grade?
2.       Needs to work on earning credits for graduation?
3.      Wants to enroll in a course to work ahead?
4.      Is looking to explore a new subject of interest?
5.      Hopes to improve their understanding of a subject?
6.      Wants to brush up their Algebra skills before taking Advanced Algebra in the fall?

The Arrowhead High School Summer 2013 program has great changes for students:

·     Grades are now for full replacement – students NO longer bump up only one letter grade but full replacement grades (Example:  If you earned a “C” in Biology sophomore year and you go to summer school and earn an “A”…your “C” disappears and is replaced by the “A”).
·         Earn a higher GPA and get a solid base for a course next year.
·         Several new classes and options are available!
·     Online scheduling continues through June 7 so students may continue to register conveniently and efficiently

ADDING A COURSE – Although some courses are full, many options are still available.  Check the Arrowhead High School website for information on how to add a class or see your school counselor for details.

DROPPING A COURSE – If you have changed your mind and wish to drop a class or the time slot of your class no longer works, please drop the course so we can fill the spot.  You can do this using the Arrowhead website.  Students will receive an “F” if they drop after the first week of summer school.

The school counselors are available to assist students with questions or concerns!

Porcelain Deathbed
Dresden Tete-a-Tete Tea Set
By Brenda Suhan

Porcelain, the chilly
White of fresh Dresden snow
Sits on the windowsill.
Kaleidoscope of rich
Maroon and gold dances
In the winter sunshine.
The one gift she asked for.
He saved all his money
To grant a final wish:
Her childhood fantasy,
One luxury glowing
In the winter sunshine.
Fragility of life
Released in wispy breaths
Of steam soon extinguished.
Warmth of blood grows colder
Than snowy porcelain
In the winter sunshine.
Just one more final sip,
Smiling, content and free.
He smiles back, an echo
Of their love forever,
Cherished in this moment
In the winter sunshine.

The stories you have heard, sharing a bond between souls and companions. The dances you have danced, lighting a friendship with every celebration. The songs you have sung, harmonizing a sprit inside this wondrous land.

You the ash wood, the catlinite, you the porcupine quills and feathers.  You are the one who betoken the wolves, the lizards, and the black bears.

The smoke flows through your stem to my lungs as the wind flows through your feathers. You the ash wood, the porcupine quills and feathers, which elucidate the wolf.

You allow us partake in rituals, which reinforce our beliefs.

You remind me of the hardships I have gone through, the fight, the struggles. You emphasize the joy and memories we have had together.

Take me to the content waves on lakes and the moon shining upon them.  Ease my pain, relieve me from my destitution, let me dispatch my ache.

Your smoke fills my lungs as I breathe in deeply, then to relax once more  Releasing the translucent swirls to soar in the midst of the starry atmosphere.

Sydney Van Dorf (grade 12) was chosen as the grades 7-12 winner of the Delafield Public Library's Poetry Contest for her poem "La Vérité" ("The Truth").  Sydney received her award from Max Garland, Wisconsin's Poet Laureate, in a ceremony on Sunday, April 28th at the Delafield library.

Sydney's poem was written for Advanced Placement French class following a unit on Global Challenges: War and Peace.  Each student drew up a list of 20 words relating to the theme.  The students then received a classmate's list and had to write a poem using at least 8 words from the list that they received.  The poems were terrific and following a suggestion from Mr. Andy Freeburg, English teacher, the students in Ms. Ramona Armour's French class submitted their poems to the contest.  Students typed their poem in French and wrote an English translation of their poem for the contest.

Congratulations to Sydney and her teacher Ms. Armour!!

The following is Sydney's winning poem, first in French and then in English:

La Vérité
Il dit «Aie le courage.»
Il dit «Tu es soldat.
L’armée, la guerre
C’est ton travail.»
Il dit «Prends les armes.
Utilise les bombes, les pistolets.»
Mais il ne parle jamais de la mort.
Il ne dit rien du sang des camarades
Partout.

The Truth
He says, “Have courage.”
He says, “You’re a soldier.
The army, the war,
it’s your job.”
He says “Take up your arms,
Use bombs, pistols.”
But he never spoke of death.
He said nothing of the blood of my comarades
Everywhere.
